Morus alba
Tree Description:
Red mulberry trees are native to the Chicago region, however, white mulberry trees were imported from China for the silkworm industry. Mulberry trees are a good food source for silkworms, the silkworm cocoons would be unwound to extract the silk. Male mulberry trees are fruitless and can be considered weedy and invasive. The fruit of mulberry trees is sweet and edible and often cooked in pies like many other berries.
