Aesculus glabra
Tree Description:
Ohio buckeye trees are native to North America and are the state tree of Ohio. Buckeye trees are known for their spiky husks that surround the nut. The nuts have a small light patch that resembles the eye of a deer which give it the name “buckeye.” The Ohio buckeye is one of the first trees to leaf out in the spring and are in the same family as the horse chestnut. Although the buckeye nut is said to give you good luck if you keep it in your pocket, most parts of the Ohio buckeye tree are toxic to animals and humans.
