Juniperus communis
Tree Description:
Juniper trees are typically shrubs, but can also be small trees growing up to 25 feet tall. Juniper trees are native to the Chicago region and prefer dry, rocky hillsides or slopes. The bark on Juniper trees peels as the tree matures. The juniper cones or “berries” are a great food source for wildlife. Additionally, the juniper cones are an ingredient in gin that give it the distinctive pine and citrus flavor.
