Celtis occidentalis
Tree Description:
Hackberry trees are native to Illinois and are large shade trees that can grow up to 60 feet tall. Hackberry trees produce small purple-brown berries that ripen in late summer and can last through winter. The fruit is edible and attracts many birds and other animals. Hackberry trees are fast growers and adapt well to different soil types. Wart-like bumps called galls often appear on the hackberry leaves and are caused from plant-feeding insects called psyllid (sill-ids). The galls on the leaves do not harm the tree.
