Juglans nigra
Tree Description:
Black walnut trees are native to Illinois, provide great shade, and can grow up to 75 feet high. The tree roots on Black Walnuts produce a chemical called “juglone” that makes it difficult for other plants to grow in its root zone. Juglone is also found on the walnut’s husks and can stain your hands. The green husks that surround the edible nut have a citrus lemon-lime scent while the nut can taste sweet.
