American Sycamore Tree #490

Platanus occidentalis

Tree Description:

Sycamore trees are native to Illinois and are one of the tallest deciduous trees in our region. Sycamores can grow up to 100 feet high and live for almost 600 years. Sycamore trees are known for their seed balls and peeling bark that has white and gray patches. Many municipalities do not plant straight American sycamore anymore, but hybrids that are better adapted to urban soils and have greater growing tolerances. Common throughout the Chicago region is the London planetree, which is a cross between the American sycamore and Asian planetree.
