Ulmus americana
Tree Description:
Elm trees are known for their stately appearance, wide spreading branches, and gold leaves in the fall. Additionally, Elm wood holds its shape well in water and has been used to make canoes and boats. Many municipalities planted elm trees along their streets that were sadly wiped out by Dutch elm disease that impacted thousands of elm trees in the region. One lesson learned from Dutch elm disease was the importance of having a diverse variety of tree species so that future diseases & pests cannot harm such a large portion of a species so quickly. Through research at the Morton Arboretum, they have identified new species and hybrids that are more resistant to Dutch elm disease.
